Odisha’s Mayurbhanj to have an airport, gets MoD nod

Mayurbhanj, the home district of Odisha's President Droupadi Murmu, will now have a functional airport.

The state government has received permission from the Defence Ministry to reopen a World War II-era airfield near Amarda Road in Rasgovindpur, about 45 km from the district headquarters.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) granted the state 'working permission' to develop the airstrip on 160.35 acres of land owned by the Defence Research and Development Organisation on Tuesday (DRDO). The state must compensate the Ministry with Rs 260 million. The British built the airstrip during WWII and used it as a forward airfield until the war ended in 1945. Since then, it has been defunct.
