Vizhinjam Port Seeks Environmental Nod

The Kerala government is actively pursuing environmental clearance for the second and third phases of the Vizhinjam International Seaport expansion project. This initiative, estimated to cost Rs 9,540 crore, is a significant step towards enhancing the port's capabilities and infrastructure. A public hearing is scheduled for June 19 at Vizhinjam, aiming to engage local communities from Kottukal and Vizhinjam villages, ensuring their input and concerns are considered in the development process .

The expansion includes extending the breakwater, adding new berths, and reclaiming more yard space, which are critical for the port to start commercial operations of its first phase soon. The Kerala State Pollution Control Board is facilitating this process as part of the environmental clearance steps, highlighting the government's commitment to sustainable and responsible development .

This move comes at a crucial time as the port, overseen by Vizhinjam International Seaport Ltd (VISL), aims to enhance its operational capacity and meet the increasing demands of maritime trade and logistics. The environmental and Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearance, previously extended till January 2024, underscores the ongoing efforts to comply with regulatory requirements while pushing forward with strategic expansions .

The Vizhinjam port project is pivotal not only for the economic growth of Kerala but also for India's broader strategic interests in enhancing its maritime infrastructure. The government's proactive approach in seeking environmental clearances reflects a balanced consideration of development needs and environmental sustainability, setting a precedent for future infrastructure projects in the region.
