Bullet Train: Over 76,000 segments for 16 km tunnel
A 21-km tunnel is under construction between the Bandra Kurla Complex and Shilphata for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project. Of the total length, 16 km will be excavated using three tunnel boring machines (TBMs), while the remaining 5 km will be constructed using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM). To construct the 16-km section with TBMs, 76,940 segments will be cast to form 7,441 rings. Special ring segments are being cast for the tunnel lining, each ring comprising nine curved segments and one key segment, with each segment being 2 meters wide and 0.5 meters thick. High-strength M70 grade concrete is being used to ensure superior structural integrity and long-term durability.

Battery systems to move stranded Kolkata Metro rakes
In a first in the country, the Metro Railway Kolkata is installing a battery system that will allow a train filled with passengers to move to the nearest station in the event of a sudden power outage. The Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is coming up in the Dakshineswar-New Garia corridor (Blue Line) which runs across Kolkata. The system is expected to be completed by the end of this year. The new system in the Blue Line, India’s oldest Metro service, will be an “amalgamation of inverters and advanced chemistry cell (ACC) batteries”. ACCs are the new generation advanced energy storage technologies that can store electric energy, either as electrochemical or chemical energy and convert it back to electric energy.
