Indore Metro: New feasibility survey ordered after public suggestions

Some segments of the public and various social organisations are dissatisfied with certain proposed routes of the under-construction metro rail in Indore. Consequently, officials have been instructed to conduct a new feasibility survey, announced Madhya Pradesh Urban Development Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya.

He mentioned that officials have been directed to submit their report within a month. After an open house meeting with local stakeholders of the metro rail project, Vijayvargiya noted that it appeared the public and representatives of social organizations were unhappy with the current planning of some metro rail routes in the city. Participants had suggested changes, particularly in the underground portion of the metro rail project.

Vijayvargiya stated that officials had been instructed to carry out a new feasibility survey focusing on the technical and financial aspects in light of these suggestions and to submit a report within a month. He added that approximately 30 to 40 per cent of the metro rail project in the city had been completed, and that all decisions regarding this project had already been taken at both the Central and state government levels.

He also emphasized that an appropriate decision would be made based on the feasibility report since it was a matter of the city's interest, stating that even if there was minimal damage, they would ensure the city would not suffer.

The foundation stone for the 31.50-kilometer-long first phase of the metro rail project in Indore, costing a total of Rs 75.80 billion, was laid on September 14, 2019. A trial run on a 5.9-kilometer priority section between Gandhi Nagar and Number 3 stations took place in September 2023.
