Dhakuria Bridge Subsides; KMDA Acts Swiftly

A section of Dhakuria bridge, one of Kolkata's oldest landmarks, experienced a minor subsidence prompting swift action from the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA). Officials quickly barricaded the affected area and initiated repair work, ensuring minimal disruption to vehicular movement.

Constructed nearly six decades ago, Dhakuria bridge has faced challenges over the years, including rat infestations that have compromised its structural integrity. The rodents have gnawed into the bridge's base, weakening the soil structure and reducing the load-bearing capacity of its approach ramps.

"We had to take immediate action as part of our emergency response. The subsided stretch was cordoned off promptly, and repair work commenced without delay," stated a spokesperson from the southeast guard overseeing the operation.

The repair involved filling the subsided area with a fresh bituminous layer to stabilize the carriageway. Despite the challenges posed by the damage, authorities confirmed that vehicular traffic was managed effectively, thanks to careful planning during the repair process.

"While the immediate repair addresses the subsidence, our focus now shifts to long-term solutions for strengthening the bridge's approach ends," explained an official from KMDA. Plans include soil strengthening and stability measures to rectify the underlying issues that contributed to the subsidence.

A structural assessment conducted previously identified weaknesses exacerbated by the rodent damage, prompting repairs to the bridge's base structure and expansion joints. Cement mixed with glass particles was used to deter further rodent activity and reinforce compromised sections.

"The soil characteristics of the bridge have been evaluated to guide our stabilization efforts," added the official. "We are preparing a comprehensive project plan that will involve grouting and concrete refilling to enhance the structural resilience of the bridge's approach ends."

The incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by aging infrastructure in Kolkata, where historical landmarks like Dhakuria bridge require vigilant maintenance and proactive measures to ensure public safety and continued functionality.
